A VERY BUSY FEBRUARY
I was still playing at weaving and attempt number two was slightly less childlike so a little progress had been made! But, just as I began to contemplate my third attempt my thoughts went off on a tangent! I quite liked the look of the warp threads showing but I’m guessing serious weavers would be absolutely appalled at the thought! I had found some old birthday cards I made very long ago and liked the combination of textures and the wandering threads so I decided to make a waving along a similar vein. I used thicker threads and torn strips of fabric to weave with and accentuated the warp threads by over stitching them on the sewing machine. Once tucked into a mount it began to look more attractive.
Just as I was beginning to scratch at the surface of this
ancient craft I was stopped in my tracks when my granddaughter announced that
she needed some macramé wall hangings for her imminent 13th birthday.
Suddenly February became very busy indeed! Many years ago (about 35 actually!), I was very into making macramé of all shapes and sizes, large wall pieces, plant hangers, owls and dream catchers to name but a few. Would my fingers remember what to do?
Thankfully they did and I spent some time knotting in earnest. I chose a very
simple pattern for the first piece and repeated it for the second with the addition of
some beads.
Suffice to say Amelia was very pleased and I was completely
hooked again. Looking on line I was amazed to see the enormous variety of cords
not to mention the fabulous range of colours available. The next piece will be
for me when I finally decide on a colour.
On this last day of February I will leave you with a
look at a new weaving I started this morning. I was inspired by some weathered
stems of a Diorama from the garden and rather than compost them I filled a vase and brought them inside. Such beautiful muted colours and interesting
markings were soon revealed. I enjoyed weaving with textures, raised effects and different fabrics / threads
but having matched some colours I will continue to work with plain weaving and
instead opt for some additions to the finished surface. I haven’t decided yet
but I will have plenty of time to think as my fingers work.
Beautiful work Annie
